‘Difficult day’: Sport weighs in on tricky discussion

In statements made on social media on Thursday morning, professional sports teams and organisations across the country have made statements about Australia Day.

Earlier this week, the Australian Open confirmed there would be no official Australia Day celebrations in Melbourne Park.

A-League players have also spoken out about feeling uncomfortable playing on the day – which for the past nine years has seen Melbourne Victory host Sydney FC at AAMI Park – next door to Melbourne Park.

Indigenous cricketer Ashleigh Gardner has also this week spoken out about scheduling international fixtures on January 26.

At the time of publishing, only one NRL club – South Sydney – had made any kind of statement, with the NRL joining it by “paying tribute to the resilience and enormous contribution our Aboriginal and Torres Strait brothers and sisters make to our nation and the greatest game for all”.

In the AFL it was the opposite, with the league not appearing to make its own statement, leaving the door open for all clubs to send out their own commentary.
