Steve Smith takes an amazing catch.

“Catch of the century?” Indian great Sanjay Manjrekar inquired.

“It’s not far off,” former Australia captain Aaron Finch replied.

“An absolute blinder from Steve Smith. Who needs three slips when you’ve got Steve Smith standing there? He’s been known over the years to take them one handed beauties. Last game there was a lot that just got to his fingertips, but this one, straight into the hand.

“Almost catches it behind him… brilliant.”

Starc strikes in first over against India

Nathan Ellis – who replaced Glenn Maxwell in the Australian lineup – trapped Virat Kohli lbw for 31 in his first over to leave India reeling at 6-73 after 16 overs.

Australia won the toss and elected to bowl, with Alex Carey replacing Josh Inglis as wicketkeeper.

The pitch had been under covers owing to rain and was helpful to the bowlers.
